About Paleokastro Monastery
The Paleokastro Monastery (meaning Old Castle) is an 18th century nunnery situated on a hill near the town of Ano Mera in one of the greenest spots on the island. Its architecture is particularly interesting and the interior is decorated with icons and a magnificent altar. The striking 3-metre granite slab (menhir) that protrudes out of the ground next to the monastery is believed to be an ancient symbol of worship or a gravestone.
