About Chora

Located on the western coast of the island, Chora is a labyrinth of narrow flag-stoned streets and whitewashed houses with colourful doors. Get lost and explore an enchanting town with an exciting historical past. The Archaeological Museum, the Aegean Maritime Museum, the Agricultural Museum, the Catholic and Paraportiani churches and the traditional windmills are must-sees. But on your wanderings don't miss the many hidden gems.

Begin your stroll at the Town Hall on the eastern side of the port. The building, constructed in the 18th century, has a beautiful ceramic-tiled roof. Across the street is the church of Ai-Nikolakis (Saint Nicholas) and a short walk away, in the Kastro neighbourhood lies the Panaghia Paraportiani (the Church of Our Lady), one of Mykonos' most famous landmarks. Turn right and find the Folklore Museum, left for the old residential area Mikri Venetia (Little Venice). Settle at a cafe in Skarpa square, watch the world go by and admire the antique houses.

Spend an afternoon around Kato Myloi, a popular hillside area with many shops and restaurants and where in the evening you can watch the sun set over the Aegean. The beautiful Alefkandra neighbourhood is situated below the hill where there is a beach and famous Catholic and Metropolitan churches.

Chora has many of the Cycladic islands iconic windmills. Left over from the days when Mykonos was an important grain-producing area, these cylindrical structures with their wooden roofs are a defining feature of the Mykonian lands. You can see several on Kato Myloi, just bellow the city centre.

The lively neighbourhood of Barkia, also on the western side of the city, is crowded with bars, shops, and street vendors and has a youthful personality, a delightful stop for lunch and browsing.

Travel further inland to the Tria Pigadia (Three Wells) and the 15th century church of Agios Georgios (Saint George). The Aegean Maritime Museum and Lena's House are minutes away and further on is Matoyanni Street where you can find international boutiques and many cafes and bars. Off the end of the high street, before Mavrogenous Square, are the church of Agia Kyriaki and the Public Library, both worth a visit.

It's worth spending several days in Chora to experience all the wealth of beauty and culture that make Mykonos such a fabulous holiday destination.

The northern Bus station in Fabrika, takes you to Platys Yalos, Psarou, Ornos, most South facing beaches and the airport, whereas the southern station behind the old Port takes you to Ano Mera, Elia, Tourlos, Agios Stefanos, Kalafatis etc... The official taxi stand is located at Mando Mavrogenous Square near the port and another "unofficial" one at the Fabrika Bus station near Lakka.
